Meet the FreeState Staff: Kaitlyn Drake
What FreeState Justice Taught me about LGBTQ+ advocacy
Kaitlyn Drake (They/Them)
Legal Intern
Having the opportunity to work for FreeState Justice is important to me as an LGBTQ+ person who went to law school to serve my community and advocate for justice. LGBTQ+ people in the United States are facing increasingly hostile conditions based on their identities, and it can sometimes feel as if there is no hope for the LGBTQ+ community. We as LGBTQ+ people face the harsh reality that our neighbors, classmates, coworkers, and community members may not only exclude us because of who we are, but also may be rewarded for it by our legal system.
FreeState Justice envisions a world in which LGBTQ+ people are protected by the legal system. From name changes to supporting broader systemic litigation and policy work, FreeState Justice is focused on making Maryland a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community in ways that allow LGBTQ+ people to thrive, connect, and live authentically. Working at FreeState Justice has shown me that there are and always will be advocates for the LGBTQ+ community, and that we as LGBTQ+ people are more than capable of protecting each other. We show up for ourselves when others do not. We intimately understand our own issues. We work to understand each other where our identities do not overlap and acknowledge that each of us have different lived experiences to bring to the table.
FreeState Justice gives LGBTQ+ people access to justice through mutual understanding, community connection, and a client-centered approach that focuses on the goals of those who come to us for advice. As an aspiring civil rights attorney and an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, I am so honored to be serving my own community in tangible ways and contributing to the mission of making Maryland a safe state for everyone.
